Artificial intelligence (AI) has made significant strides in mimicking human-like text on social media platforms, according to a surprising study published in the scientific journal Science Advances. The research explored whether humans could differentiate between disinformation and accurate information presented as tweets, determining whether the tweet was written by a human or AI.
The study focused on OpenAI’s text generator, GPT-3, which has gained popularity for its ability to engage in realistic conversations based on user prompts. The researchers discovered that participants often mistook AI-generated tweets as human-generated more frequently than tweets actually authored by humans. This finding suggests that AI can convincingly imitate human conversation, surpassing the ability of real humans.
Concerns surrounding the potential misuse of AI have arisen, particularly regarding the spread of disinformation on the internet and the manipulation of human perceptions. A survey involving 697 participants from the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, and Canada was conducted to evaluate their ability to identify accurate or inaccurate information and determine if it was AI-generated or human-crafted. Strikingly, the study revealed that AI-generated disinformation was more convincing than disinformation created by humans. The participants were also more likely to recognize accurate information presented as an AI-generated tweet compared to those created by humans.
Furthermore, the researchers noted that participants’ confidence in distinguishing between synthetic and organic text decreased as they progressed through the survey, suggesting that GPT-3’s convincing mimicry of human conversation could lead to individuals feeling overwhelmed and relying less on critical evaluation.
