Artificial intelligence (AI) is set to revolutionize many occupations soon and how businesses operate, according to a report from OpenAI, OpenResearch, and the University of Pennsylvania. The paper, authored by researchers Tyna Eloundou, Sam Manning, Pamela Mishkin, and Daniel Rock, claims that at least 80 percent of all jobs could be affected by AI.
Moreover, the highest impacts could be in jobs requiring higher educational qualifications with around half of the tasks in those jobs being augmented by AI. It is also important to note that AI systems would influence tasks and not necessarily replace them.
Large language models (LLMs) such as the GPT-4 model are used as the basis of the paper’s findings. The research determined that jobs ranging from programming, writing, to scientific research could be tremendously impacted by AI.
At the same time, the study also points out that there could be possible implications associated with implementing AI such as altered job quality, skilllessness and global inequality. However, the study states that predicting the implications of AI on jobs is still a major challenge due to the dynamic nature of AI technology.
The company OpenAI was founded in 2015 by Elon Musk and several leading researchers in artificial intelligence with the goal of researching and developing advanced AI technologies. Since then, it has made considerable progress in developing AI technologies, including GPT-3, the world’s largest language model. Their mission is to ensure that AI is developed safely and in a self-sustaining way that benefits humanity.
Tyna Eloundou is a research scientist at OpenAI with an interest in natural language processing and language modeling. She has been an active member of the OpenAI team for almost two years now, working on both project management and technical roles. She is also a researcher at OpenResearch, a research lab focused on using AI, robotics and other technologies to benefit people and the environment. Tyna has a Masters degree in Artificial Intelligence from McGill University.
It is clear from this research that AI will have a major impact on jobs, and businesses need to start factoring this into their strategies in order to stay on top of the game. It is also important that society, regulators, and policymakers become aware of the various implications of AI in order to ensure that its use is beneficial for all.
