Apple is the latest to enforce company policy to restrict the use of A.I. chat tools like ChatGPT in the workplace. This move follows mounting concerns about sensitive data being exposed through the use of these AI models.
OpenAI, the owner of AI chat tool ChatGPT, has promised users that their data is kept secure and that they are able to prompt for help while not leaking any valuable information. This has not stopped companies like Amazon, JPMorgan, and Bank of America from banning employees from using ChatGPT.
As a result of these worries, Apple is taking precautions by asking staff to not use CoPilot, a similar tool owned by Microsoft. An internal document from Apple suggests that the company is also warning workers from uploading confidential information to such services.
This is not the only incident of potential data leakage arising from A.I. tools. Reports indicate that in March a Samsung engineer uploaded source code to ChatGPT, resulting in a temporary ban from the electronics company.
It’s clear, then, that confidentiality is a significant concern. Facebook has taken extra steps by introducing an incognito mode to ChatGPT, which does not save chats or prompts, while also monitoring them for abuse. Microsoft may be ready to launch its own, private version of the software, with data controls, aimed at corporate customers. And IBM has unveiled watsonx for A.I., which keeps data private from clients.
OpenAI has now released a version of ChatGPT for iOS, the operating system used on Apple’s own iPhones and iPads, last week. The app is free and will sync chat history with the web version, allowing for voice prompts thanks to its own speech recognition technology.
