Apple is on the verge of striking a deal with OpenAI to incorporate ChatGPT technology into the iPhone, signaling a major move towards integrating artificial intelligence features into its devices. According to sources familiar with the matter who requested anonymity, the agreement is in its final stages, with negotiations centered on integrating ChatGPT features into iOS 18, the upcoming iPhone operating system.
In addition to the collaboration with OpenAI, Apple has also engaged in discussions with Google’s Alphabet Inc. regarding the potential licensing of the Gemini chatbot. Although talks with Google have not yet culminated in an agreement, they are ongoing.
If the pact with OpenAI materializes, Apple will be able to offer a popular chatbot as part of a series of new AI features set to be unveiled next month. While the announcement of an agreement is not imminent, preparations for the integration of ChatGPT technology into Apple’s devices are underway.
Both Apple and OpenAI declined to comment on the reported negotiations. Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, has expressed personal interest in using OpenAI’s ChatGPT, albeit acknowledging that certain issues need addressing. He has reassured that new AI features will be introduced to Apple products in a deliberate manner.
Apple’s foray into the artificial intelligence realm is expected to take center stage at the upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference in June. The company’s plan includes leveraging its in-house processors to drive AI features through data centers. Cook emphasized Apple’s belief in the transformative capabilities of AI and highlighted the unique integration of hardware, software, and services that sets the company apart in this field.
