This is a major breakthrough in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI), as well as Natural Language Processing (NLP).
The paper focused on ChatGPT, an AI-powered conversational agent developed by OpenAI. This technology is a combined effort of pre-training and fine-tuning, which allows the AI model to generate human-like text. The pre-training phase exposes the AI model to billions of sentences, which familiarizes the model with grammar, syntax and even some factual information. After this, the model is furthered refined by the fine-tuning phase, which uses carefully generated examples to adjust the AI to specific tasks and applications.
The AI model behind ChatGPT is based on a neural network architecture called the Transformer. It is incredibly efficient in handling sequential data and this particular architecture relies on a self-attention mechanism to detect the importance of words and phrases in the input text. Furthermore, ChatGPT is incredibly useful in various applications, such as customer support, content creation, language translation, and virtual assistants.
Despite its impressive capabilities, ChatGPT has some limitations, such as occasionally generating inaccurate or nonsensical information and being sensitive to the input it receives. Microsoft researcher Stephen Wolfram highlights this complexity and simplicity of the AI language model in his essay, and questions if it can really work like a human brain, as the training strategy of ChatGPT is different from that of a human brain.
