AI from the healthcare industry has pioneered some of the most transformative applications. VB Spotlight shares some of the lessons learned from the front lines to help companies in other industries scale their AI successfully.
The healthcare sector has faced unique complexities that have delayed the progress of AI in this field. However, driven by the innovative approach of forward-thinking companies, the use of AI in the sector is expected to exceed $187B in 2030. Pioneers in the industry have identified best practices and lessons that can be used for AI scaling in other industries.
Elekta, a global health tech pioneer, has been leading the way in the application of ML-powered systems for radiology and radiation therapy used to treat cancer and brain diseases. Elekta’s “Access 2025” initiative is aiming to increase access to radiotherapy treatments worldwide, and the company has set up the POP-AART lab in Amsterdam dedicated to this goal. This lab is exploring ways to leverage data to make faster decisions in the treatment process.
To scale its AI initiatives and encourage collaboration, Elekta established a secure and distributed data infrastructure. AI applications require large volumes of data, however the organization had difficulties getting access to the anonymized medical data it needed due to privacy concerns. Elekta overcame this by setting up a pipeline for medical data that could be used for AI activities.
Elekta’s R&D team came to the realization that a cloud-based infrastructure was needed to manage the complexities of AI usage effectively. Cloud-based computing enabled the company to run parallel experiments, scale GPU capacity and develop new services more quickly.
The company recognized that partnering with trusted providers was the smartest way to deploy and scale AI applications. End-to-end partners allowed for unified infrastructure, platform integration, low-level infrastructure and AI tools that Elekta didn’t possess in-house.
