AI and Humans Collaborate to Create the First ChatGPT-Designed Robot

Researchers from the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology have developed a robot with the help of OpenAI’s ChatGPT-3 language model. Utilizing the large language model’s ability to process and interpret massive amounts of text data, the team asked ChatGPT what future challenges humanity faces, with the AI proposing food supply, an aging population, and climate change as the most pressing issues. The researchers chose food supply as the direction for the robot design, using ChatGPT’s data sourcing capabilities to help design a motor-driven gripper for pulling ripe tomatoes from the vine. While the AI was useful in the design process, the researchers played a crucial role in optimizing ChatGPT’s code and finalizing the robot’s construction materials. The researchers successfully tested the robot in the real world and believe there is potential for transforming the collaboration process between humans and large language models in the design of innovative systems such as robotics. However, they point out the potential biases, plagiarism, and intellectual property issues that could arise from extensive AI input, calling for ethical considerations as the technology continues to develop.
