The adoption of AI technology in India has witnessed a significant surge, increasing by 2.5 times since 2017, according to Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, Rajeev Chandrasekhar. In his response to the Rajya Sabha, the minister acknowledged the concerns surrounding the safety, trust, and potential harm associated with emerging technologies like AI. To address these concerns, the government has been actively working towards the responsible implementation of AI through publications on Responsible AI for All by NITI Aayog.
The minister highlighted that AI serves as a catalyst for India’s digital economy and innovation ecosystem. The report also noted that AI applications, such as language processing, robotics, computer vision, and image processing, are being widely adopted across various sectors including education, health, finance, mobility, e-commerce, and manufacturing.
While discussing the regulation of AI technology, the government hinted at the possibility of formulating a global law. The topic of AI was also a key focus of the G7 Digital and Tech Ministers meeting held in Japan during April 2023. The participating countries expressed the need to assess the opportunities and challenges presented by these technologies, emphasizing the promotion of safety and trust.
Future G7 discussions are expected to delve into generative AI, covering subjects such as governance, safeguarding intellectual property rights including copyright, promoting transparency, addressing disinformation, including foreign information manipulation, and ensuring responsible utilization of these technologies.
