Samsung Reportedly Prohibits Use of AI Generative Tools

Date:

The consumer technology powerhouse Samsung is reportedly banning their employees from using generative AI tools. According to Bloomberg, Samsung notified the staff of their biggest division on Monday of the new policy. The company is concerned that the data used by the AI platforms could be leaked to external parties.

ChatGPT, a chatbot that is built on a powerful AI engine, has gained public attention. It can write software, convers with people and even compose poetry. Companies such as Microsoft are using the technology foundation GPT-4 of ChatGPT in order to improve Bing search results, provide email writing tips and developing presentations.

The policy is being implemented due to the potential risks of AI use and hundreds of tech executives and AI experts have signed an open letter — urging AI labs to pause development of AI systems. This was sparked as Samsung engineers released internal source code by uploading it to ChatGPT. To ensure a secure environment for the usage of generative AI, the company is taking precautions by implementing a temporary restriction and reviewing security measures.

Samsung was established in 1938, and is based in South Korea. It is a multinational conglomerate, which is the world’s largest manufacturer of consumer electronics and the electronic components, such as semiconductors, among others. It is one of the top firms in the world in terms of market capitalization.

The Korean government is actively concerned with AI-related security and privacy issues. Lee Jung-hee, a Minister of the Office for Government Policy Coordination, credits himself with more than 30 years of experience in journalism within the Silicon Valley. He has been a significant player in advocating for South Korea to become a leader in the artificial intelligence market in terms of ethical standards of experimentation and development. South Korean government agencies have identified a number of potential risks related to AI usage and have taken action to address these issues.
