What Happened When a Teacher Caught a Student Using ChatGPT For an Assignment

Date:

The attention of many people has been drawn to the launch of ChatGPT, an AI language model introduced in November 2022. The promise of this technology was to deliver articulate answers and detailed responses. However, a recent example of an assignment gone wrong demonstrated the limitation of this system. A student was given an essay assignment on William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, and they attempted to finish it using ChatGPT. Unfortunately, the student’s plan didn’t go as planned, as their response had been generated by the program and failed to be completely erased from the answer sheet. The teacher noticed the generated message, which read: “Please accept my apologies; however, as an AI language model, I am not able to carry out this assignment.” Needless to say, this caused a stir on social media, with some arguing for the abolishment of essays and some saying that eventually it would be impossible to tell the difference between human writing and AI.

It is widely accepted that as technology continues to develop, so too does AI, which will only become more intelligent in the coming years. As such, it is necessary to be conscious of the implications of using advanced Artificial Intelligence such as ChatGPT. It is also important to consider the ethical implications that come with using these advanced AI tools, such as the risk of plagiarism and an inability to detect generated responses.

Apple and Google also recently voiced their concern over the prevalence of illegal content that was being published on Amazon’s Kindle Store. On top of this, Elon Musk is developing another AI called ‘TruthGPT’ that is designed to counter the AI chatbots released by Microsoft and Google. With these types of applications, the gaps between AI and humans will continue to narrow, pushing the limits of what AI is capable of even further.
