The education sector is experiencing a rapid transformation, thanks to advancements in artificial intelligence (AI). At the forefront of this change is Dan Rosensweig, Executive Chairman at Chegg, who will be shedding light on AI’s impact on education at the upcoming TNW Conference on June 20.
In the past, the introduction of ChatGPT in 2022 raised concerns within schools and academia, with fears that it could enable cheating and hinder the learning process. However, as we fast-forward to 2024, these fears have subsided, and the potential benefits of large language models (LLMs) in education are being recognized.
While LLMs have shown promise in summarizing vast amounts of data effectively, they still lack the personalization and accuracy needed to truly enhance the learning experience for students. This is where education-specific small language models (SLMs) come into play, according to Rosensweig.
Unlike their generalist counterparts, SLMs are designed with pedagogy in mind, understanding how students learn best and catering to their individual needs. Additionally, a robust and proprietary dataset is essential for training AI across different subject verticals, a feat that Chegg has achieved with its 52 SLMs based on over 100 million pieces of learning content.
Rosensweig believes that AI-powered personalized learning support not only improves the learning process but also equips students with critical thinking skills and employable knowledge. By embracing SLMs tailored to the specific needs of students, the education sector stands to benefit significantly from the potential of AI in education.
