Elon Musk to File Lawsuit against Microsoft over Alleged Use of Twitter Data to Train ChatGPT

Date:

Twitter CEO Elon Musk has threatened to take Microsoft to court. His claims surrounds the alleged illegal utilization of Twitter data to power their ChatGPT language model. This comes after Microsoft insisted that it would no longer support Twitter starting on April 25th 2023, without paying for their Application Programming Interface (API).

To try and earn some money from Twitter’s backend support and information pathways, Elon Musk decided to put the platform’s APIs behind a paywall. Companies using the platform must now pay up to $42,000 a month for access otherwise they will be cut off from the social media service.

This means that Microsoft, along with other companies, are no longer able to use the platform to manage their tweets or engagement without paying for it. Elon Musk then took to Twitter to threaten a lawsuit, although he did not specify the issue further. It is believed that he meant Microsoft used Twitter data to train the GPT language model which is powering their ChatGPT Generative AI platform. This platform is run by OpenAI, an organization that recently received an investment from Microsoft.

It remains unclear if Elon Musk will follow up on his threats or not, as he has a history of making similar ones in the past. Either way, it’s easy to see why the tech CEO is so passionate about the security of Twitter’s data and the money they could potentially make from it.
