Chipotle, the popular fast-casual chain known for its customizable burrito bowls, is looking to revolutionize its offerings with the help of artificial intelligence. The company’s CEO, Brian Niccol, revealed that they have been experimenting with a robot designed to prep guacamole with impressive precision.
This new guacamole prepping robot has the potential to ensure that customers receive consistent portion sizes, whether they opt for extra guacamole on the side or in their bowl. Thanks to advancements in vision, technology, and AI, Chipotle aims to deliver accuracy without compromising on speed.
In addition to the guacamole robot, Chipotle had previously tested a robot named Chippy for making tortilla chips. However, Niccol shared that Chippy faced challenges, particularly with cleaning, making it impractical for regular use in their restaurants.
While the guacamole-prepping robot, Autocado, is still in the testing phase, Niccol expressed confidence in its potential, mentioning that they are already on their third or fourth prototype. The company is gearing up to introduce this technology into their restaurants soon, promising a more efficient and consistent dining experience for customers.
Looking ahead, Chipotle has ambitious expansion plans, with Niccol projecting the opening of 285 to 315 new restaurants this year. With approximately 3,400 locations currently, the chain aims to reach at least 7,000 U.S. restaurants over the next decade. Niccol also hinted at the possibility of entering the Chinese market in the future, although further feasibility studies are required.
