Jinko Solar, a leading solar panel and energy storage manufacturer, is making significant strides in its commitment to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Despite the continued rise in global CO2 emissions, Jinko Solar is dedicated to going beyond business objectives and prioritizing environmental sustainability.
To ensure the effective management of climate change, Jinko Solar has implemented a robust climate change management system that evaluates sustainable metrics and targets, mitigates climate risks, and promotes the transition to green operations. The company has also joined various climate initiatives to establish sustainable objectives and indicators of success.
In 2019, Jinko Solar became the first solar manufacturer to join both the EP100 and RE100 climate initiatives. By joining these initiatives, the company committed to improving internal efficiency and powering all operations with 100% renewable energy by 2028. Jinko Solar has been fulfilling these pledges by installing solar panels on the roofs of its production facilities. Currently, three of its factories in China and Malaysia operate completely on renewable energy, and over 50% of the company’s operations are powered by a mix of renewable energies such as hydro, solar, and wind power.
Jinko Solar’s dedication to sustainability extends beyond internal measures. In 2021, the company joined the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) to establish a road map for reducing emissions in line with the Paris Agreement. As part of this initiative, Jinko Solar has pledged to achieve complete net-zero operations by 2050. The company has also established a greenhouse gas emissions inventory and is actively working towards reducing its emissions based on the guidance provided by SBTi and the Greenhouse Gas Protocol framework.
In terms of progress, Jinko Solar has already made significant strides towards its net-zero goal. By the end of 2022, the company had reduced its emissions by 32,800 tonnes through the installation of solar panels and the implementation of internal emission-reduction systems. Furthermore, Jinko Solar’s wafer factory in Leshan received a Zero Carbon Factory certification, making it the first solar wafer factory to achieve net-zero status. This achievement was primarily attributed to energy management, improved efficiency, and the implementation of emission-reducing technologies.
Jinko Solar’s commitment to sustainability has not gone unnoticed. The company recently topped the photovoltaic industry as the leader in the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment. This evaluation reflects Jinko Solar’s exceptional environmental, social, and governance framework and highlights its continuous efforts to create a sustainable future. Additionally, Jinko Solar was awarded the 2023 Global Sustainable Company Award by Environmental Finance, further affirming its dedication to environmental stewardship.
As Jinko Solar maintains its position as a sustainability leader, it aims to transform the solar industry into one characterized by carbon neutrality and renewable operations. With its net-zero initiatives, Jinko Solar is setting an example for other companies and proving that sustainable business practices can have positive environmental and financial outcomes.
