The Spanish Data Protection Agency (AEPD) has recently opened an investigation into American artificial intelligence company OpenAI, the creator of the AI chatbot service ChatGPT, regarding possible non-compliance of current data protection regulations. Last week, AEPD requested the European Data Protection Committee (EDPB) to further analyze this matter, as services that could potentially have a huge impact on people’s data protection rights requires “coordinated” actions at the European level.
Later in the week, during a meeting, the EDPB decided to form a working group to foster cooperation and encourage the exchange of information regarding the actions that are taken by data protection authorities. The AEPD made a statement to support all innovative technologies, like artificial intelligence, with full compliance of existing and applicable laws. According to the agency, the development of such technologies has to start from a fundamental base like this to ensure that people’s rights and freedom can be safeguarded.
