Cal Fire, the firefighting agency in California, has partnered with the University of San Diego for an innovative pilot program aimed at enhancing firefighting efforts through the use of artificial intelligence (AI). The collaboration is part of the University’s Alert California program, which monitors a vast network of cameras spread throughout the state to detect potential wildfires and other natural disasters. This initiative marks a significant milestone as Cal Fire becomes the first and only firefighting agency in the world to implement such a system.
The key objective of this collaboration is to improve firefighting capabilities and response times. By harnessing the power of AI, which constantly monitors camera feeds for any abnormalities such as smoke, Cal Fire can be promptly alerted to potential fire incidents. This early detection system has already proven highly effective, as it has notified Cal Fire of 128 incidents over the past two months, even before any 911 calls were made. Out of these incidents, 77 were confirmed as actual fires, showcasing the system’s accuracy.
The trial phase of the program will include the participation of several Cal Fire units across California, including San Bernardino, Sonoma-Lake-Napa, Madera-Mariposa-Merced, Nevada Yuba Placer, Shasta-Trinity, and San Luis Obispo. This comprehensive trial will provide valuable insights and data to further optimize the AI system for enhanced fire detection and response.
With an investment of over $20 million in the past four years, Cal Fire is committed to advancing this program further. They plan to contribute an additional $3.5 million in the coming years to ensure the continued development and effectiveness of the AI system.
