Elon Musk is moving forward with a major artificial-intelligence (AI) project within Twitter, the tech giant he purchased earlier this year. In order to speed up the development of this project, Musk has allegedly bought around 10,000 graphics processing units for the platform. This number of GPUs is an indication of Musk’s commitment to the said project, given that these are usually used to deal with more arduous computational tasks.
To this end, the project is said to involve a language model designed to generate new content and text. This language model could be trained using the large data set of Twitter, given the social media’s disposition for data gathering. This project may also potentially be used in order to improve the search function in Twitter, an issue that had been pointed out by Musk in the past.
Complementing the purchase of the GPUs, Musk has recently acquired two AI engineers, Igor Babuschkin and Manuel Kroiss, from Alphabet’s DeepMind. It may be assumed that these two will help with the development of Musk’s project.
Apart from generative AI, another possible use of the said project is in terms of advertising. This is particularly crucial for Twitter, given that advertising is the main driver of its core revenue. With the right training, the AI model could be used to create ads and target specific audiences.
It is noteworthy that Musk had previously assaulted the development of generative AI in public, citing the importance of regulating the technologies to ensure that they are operating within “the public interest”.
