ChatGPT’s Responses to Healthcare Queries are Almost Indistinguishable from Humans, Study Finds
In an exciting new study conducted by the NYU Tandon School of Engineering and Grossman School of Medicine, it has been revealed that ChatGPT’s responses to healthcare-related queries are nearly indistinguishable from those provided by humans. This discovery suggests that chatbots have the potential to be valuable allies in the communication between healthcare providers and their patients.
During the study, a research team from NYU presented ten patient questions and responses to 392 participants aged 18 and above. Half of the responses were generated by a human healthcare provider, while the other half were provided by ChatGPT. The participants were then asked to identify the source of each response and rate their trust in the ChatGPT-generated responses on a 5-point scale ranging from completely untrustworthy to completely trustworthy.
The results were both surprising and promising. It was found that people have limited ability to distinguish between chatbot and human-generated responses. On average, participants correctly identified the chatbot responses 65.5% of the time and the provider responses 65.1% of the time. These percentages remained consistent across different demographic categories of the respondents. It appears that our trust in technology is growing stronger.
Overall, the participants demonstrated a mild level of trust in the responses generated by ChatGPT, scoring it an average of 3.4 on the trust scale. However, the study also revealed that trust was lower when the health-related complexity of the question was higher. Questions regarding logistical matters such as scheduling appointments and insurance inquiries received the highest trust rating (3.94 average score), followed by topics relating to preventive care (e.g., vaccines, cancer screenings) with an average score of 3.52. Diagnostic and treatment advice received the lowest trust ratings, scoring 2.90 and 2.89 respectively.
This study highlights the potential for chatbots to significantly assist in the communication between patients and healthcare providers, especially in administrative tasks and the management of common chronic diseases. However, it is crucial for further research to be conducted to determine if chatbots can undertake more clinical roles. Healthcare providers should remain cautious and exercise critical judgment when utilizing chatbot-generated advice, considering the limitations and potential biases of AI models.
