YouGov Study Finds Australians are Familiar with and Utilize ChatGPT

Date:

A recent survey by market research firm YouGov has revealed that almost half of Australians (48%) have heard of ChatGPT, an AI chatbot, and nearly a quarter (23%) have interacted with it. However, men are more likely to be aware of and use the AI chatbot than women, and younger Australians are also more likely to have used ChatGPT.

The survey found that the most popular use case for ChatGPT is entertainment, with 69% of Australians who have interacted with the chatbot using it for this purpose. Millennials were found to be the most likely generation to use ChatGPT for entertainment, while Gen X was less likely.

Educational purposes (57%) and business/work purposes (51%) were the second and third most popular use cases, respectively. Millennials were again found to be the most likely generation to use ChatGPT for professional purposes, while only a third of Gen Z did the same.

When asked about the tasks they have used ChatGPT for, over two-fifths of Australians have used it to complete work assignments (42%) or produce creative work (42%). Writing a resume (32%) was the next most common task. Interestingly, three in ten of those who have interacted with ChatGPT have used it to create passwords for their devices and online accounts, while a fifth have asked it to write a dating profile.

When it came to purchasing products recommended by ChatGPT, the survey found that Millennials and Gen X who had used the AI chatbot were more likely to do so. Three-quarters of this group said they would purchase a product based on ChatGPT recommendations. However, less than two-fifths of Millennials and Gen Z who were aware of but had yet to interact with ChatGPT would make a purchase based on its recommendations.
