Adobe is at the forefront of the creative and digital industries with its Creative Cloud platform. The platform includes professional tools like Adobe Photoshop, the go-to photo editing software of choice for creative professionals. With the most recent announcement from Adobe, Photoshop users will now have access to a new generative AI tool family called Firefly. This tool will enable its users to experiment with editing a wide range of images, including adding new scenery or replacing existing objects/text with AI-generated materials.
Maria Yap, Adobe’s vice president of digital imaging, is optimistic about this advancement in digital editing, stating that it “puts the power and control of generative AI into the hands of the creator”. With the help of Firefly, Photoshop users are able to create images with great ease, thus democratizing creativity. However, there have been some issues with the accuracy of generated images—such as distorted human faces—due to limited training imagery. Fortunately, it is expected that updates to Firefly will be released frequently, which should result in smoother and more useful AI-generated results.
But in spite of its advantages, generative AI also presents some cause for concern, particularly when it comes to “misleading, fraudulent or deceptive content.” Thus, Adobe has made every effort to create policies and guidelines that should ensure the accurate implementation of its AI tools and prevent the creation of any suspicious or dangerous content. Furthermore, Firefly will not be able to replicate the style of artwork from any particular artist, as this risk was carefully taken into consideration.
Photoshop users can look forward to the upcoming release of Firefly which will be available soon in the second half of 2023. This innovative tool promises a way to quickly and successfully adjust images with inspired creativity.
