Survey Reveals: One in Five Post-Primary Students Utilizing ChatGPT for Schoolwork

Date:

A recent survey conducted by Studyclix.ie, a study website, found that one in five second-level students have used the artificial intelligence software, ChatGPT, for their schoolwork. This includes tasks such as essay writing and computer coding. 1,000 students ranging from first year to sixth year students from 26 counties across Ireland responded to the survey.

The survey also showed that 83% of students worry they use their phones too much, with 38% using their smartphones for over four hours a day and 16% using their phones for over six hours. Additionally, 64% expressed concern about the cost of living, and more than half (54%) believed video apps like TikTok and other social networks have taken away their focus and ability to study.

When it comes to exam stress, the survey found that 74% of students cited it as their chief daily concern, with 65% giving up their favorite pastimes in an effort to focus on school more. Cost of living has also impacted their choice of college, with 40% saying it has hindered their decision making process.

The study also discovered that ChatGPT, which launched six months ago, is gaining traction in the post-primary and higher education levels. Its use has been met with widespread concern since children can use the software without supervision.

Studyclix Founder Luke Saunders expressed surprise that around 22% of students have used ChatGPT in their schoolwork for writing essays in English, history, and European languages as well as writing code for their computer science class.

Saunders suggested that parents can help their children become more aware of their phone usage, and can install distraction-blocker apps such as Forest App in order to assist with healthier phone use.
