Can ChatGPT Really Replace Writers? A Discussion with Lance Askildson

Date:

Recent advances in artificial intelligence have sparked numerous predictions of the decline of many human roles and professions. Some commentators have suggested that purportedly powerful AI platforms such as ChatGPT could replace writers or educators. However, such notions are misguided, as ChatGPT does not possess the capabilities of a competent human learner and communicator.

ChatGPT is a language-processing model that combines natural language processing with more modern algorithms, allowing it to simulate conversations. Yet, although its large database and powerful computing ability can generate responses that appear intelligent, it is unable to think or reason in a meaningful way. In essence, it is more like a sophisticated auto-complete feature than an actual intelligence.

The renowned linguist and philosopher Noam Chomsky famously identified the phrase “colorless green ideas sleep furiously” as a grammatically correct but seemingly nonsensical example. It is exactly the ability to construct unique and imaginative sentences, as well as understand metaphors, which makes us so innately human. This capacity is not within the scope of ChatGPT, which can only reconstitute existing language.

Not only does ChatGPT lack the ability of free creation, it is equally limited in facilitating higher-order conceptual learning. It cannot ask questions of its own and simply cannot arise above the original theme of a conversation.

The same comparison can be made between audio recording technology, which is no replacement for journalists, and ChatGPT. To be an effective journalist, one needs to interpret and actively question their surroundings, which is outside of the ChatGPT’s capabilities. Similarly, complex understanding and breakthrough learning are achieved through interaction with an educator which ChatGPT cannot provide.

Although ChatGPT does not replace writers and teachers, it is still an enormously powerful technological advancement. It has vast potential to become a supportive asset of writers and teachers, aiding them in strengthening their work as well as helping them discover new ideas and concepts.

Lance Askildson is the Provost and a tenured Professor of Linguistics at Chaminade University of Honolulu. He teaches and researches on language and linguistics, with a focus on the applications of linguistics in technology and the importance of human language. He firmly believes that ChatGPT can aid and strengthen the science of humans’ natural language and understanding, yet cannot replace people. In order for these AI models to enhance or augment learning, it is of paramount importance to keep humans at the center, emphasizing their importance in promoting growth, development and understanding.
