Experiencing Unethical AI Matchmaking: My Hotness Rating Story

Date:

We live in a time where Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms can determine our “hotness” or attractiveness levels. A website called Hot Chat 3000 has recently been launched that will match users based on their appearance determined by AI. I decided to try the website myself and see what AI “thought” of me, no matter how messed up it can be.

Hot Chat 3000 asks users to upload a picture of themselves and determine their “hotness” rating with a scale of 1-10. The rating is based on the model CLIP that was trained on a dataset of 400 million image-text pairs. It also utilizes the “Hot or Not” dataset from the website, hotornot.com, and the SCUT-FBP5500 dataset for facial beauty prediction.

When I tested Hot Chat 3000, I uploaded a total of 15 pictures of myself and received a range of “hotness” ratings between 3.7 and 6.8. The same picture would sometimes be given different scores on different days. After finding the “hottest” picture, I was matched with someone who had an equal score as me. Unfortunately, my chat partner quickly disconnected.

The art collective MSCHF is behind the website. An American micro venture capital and manufacturing company, MSCHF is headed by Gabriel Whaley and has released several tongue-in-cheek projects since it launched in 2016, such as a program for making stock investments based on astrological signs and a “Satan Shoe” made with human blood. Recently, they raised around $120 million in their Series B fundraising.

It is important to note that the “hotness” score from Hot Chat 3000 should not be taken too seriously since the AI model is trained on biased datasets and the values can vary greatly. Despite this, the website highlights the potential of AI and its presence in many aspects of our lives.
