3 Effective Ways to Utilize ChatGPT for Enhancing Student Learning and Preventing Academic Dishonesty

Ohio State University professors of educational psychology and educational technology have suggested three ways educators can harness the power of ChatGPT to improve learning and prevent cheating. ChatGPT, which can generate essays, charts and even codes that resemble a human’s creation, has become a concern for school administrators who fear it might be used as a shortcut for easy answers, resulting in students cheating. However, according to professors, academic motivation is the leading cause of cheating, which can be prevented by creating an environment of collaborative learning and moulding academic tasks designed to focus on mastering content rather than receiving a high grade. To achieve this, the authors recommend academic institutions use ChatGPT to act as a learning partner to encourage collaboration, to increase student confidence through individualised support, and to offer personalised feedback to support students’ positive emotions, including self-confidence. When used properly, ChatGPT and other AI chatbots can support learning in and out of the classroom and encourage students to learn more and cheat less.
