In recent news, police have arrested 17 people in connection to 11 shootings, one of which occurred at a Gurdwara in Sacramento, California. The multi-agency investigation revealed that the culprits were primarily from the local Sikh community, some of whom were part of rival criminal organizations. During the raids in Northern California, many firearms, including AK-47s, handguns and even a machine gun, were found in possession of the suspects.
California Attorney General Rob Bonta, Yuba City Police Chief Brian Baker, and Sutter County District Attorney Jennifer Dupre informed that two of the arrested individuals were wanted for multiple murders committed in India earlier. Furthermore, the joint law enforcement efforts of the State were also able to prevent two further planned shootings.
Yuba City, a city with a large Sikh population, is referred to as ‘mini Punjab’ due to the influx of Sikh people and associated spiritual festivals. Last November, thousands of people attended the Nagar Kirtan march there. Additionally, many Sikhs have a strong presence through Central California.
